2016 Pre-Conference Workshop: From Concept to Reality - Waste Conversion Project Implementation

The half-day pre-conference workshop, entitled “From Concept to Reality - Waste Conversion Project Implementation,” will kick off the 2016 Renewable Energy from Waste Conference, on Monday, Nov. 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., prior to the Monday evening attendee Meet & Greet networking session. This is a unique opportunity for public- and private-sector conference attendees to leverage and further maximize their conference experience by learning from, and exchanging ideas with, industry experts and colleagues with similar experiences in an intimate workshop setting conducive to in-depth discussions.

The $149 workshop registration fee includes, in addition to the valuable program and networking opportunity, PDFs of the presentations provided, and one break with light refreshments.

The workshop will and provide the technology overview, permitting and financing considerations, and project procurement approaches needed to successfully implement a waste conversion project that can help your integrated solid waste management system get closer to zero waste to landfill.

The facilitators and speakers have the complementary engineering, technical, economic and financial expertise to address issues and questions participants may have concerning their own programs and projects and extensive real-life experience to discuss how to minimize hurdles and challenges along the way.

Status of Waste Conversion Technologies
Presenter: Stephen Simmons, Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc.

Stephen Simmons, vice president of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB), is a sustainable development business leader with more than 30 years of experience in the energy and environmental services sectors. He is highly experienced in program and project management, new business development, waste and power marketing, technology evaluation, business financial modeling, profit and loss management, facility design, procurement, and construction having worked with leading international energy operating companies and engineering/consulting firms. He has extensive renewable energy experience, having managed the development, construction, and operation of power generation projects with capital budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars. These facilities have produced millions of megawatt-hours of renewable energy, displacing millions of tons of fossil fuels. Technology-wise, he has led due diligence investigations of a number of high-tech gasification, pyrolysis, and combustion systems.

Conducting a Procurement and Development Process
Presenter: Harvey Gershman, Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc.

Harvey Gershman, president and co-founder of GBB, has been active in the solid waste management field as an adviser to government and industry for more than 40 years, specializing in strategic guidance and infrastructure and services development assistance to solid waste service/system managers and owners. He has managed the preparation of many long-term plans, market studies, cost and independent feasibility analyses, technology reviews, contractor procurements, contracts development and negotiations, and project financing activities for a broad range of recycling, composting, solid waste management, waste-to-energy and district energy projects. These projects have resulted in sustainable, efficient integrated waste management systems accepted by the community and its leadership.

Permitting Considerations for Waste Conversion Project
Presenter: Chip Clements, P.E., Clements Environmental Corp.

Chip Clements, president and founder of Clements Environmental Corp., has more than 40 years of experience in the environmental field and has managed more than 200 projects in his career. He has extensive experience in solid waste management, zero waste planning, innovative/alternative technologies, recycling and composting. He provides environmental consulting and engineering services, including regulatory compliance and environmental permitting, from inception to the point of hard design and construction, with a greater than 95 percent success rate at obtaining all facility permits and approvals. His extensive experience in the planning process has provided clients with streamlined approaches to what are often long, drawn out permitting procedures.

Tax-Exempt Financing in the Solid Waste Industry
Presenter: P. John Ruth, Jr., CTBH Partners

Prior to founding CTBH Partners, John spent six years in the merchant banking group of White Mountains Insurance Group where he led multi-disciplinary teams to execute strategic investment and financial projects for a $5 billion global (re)insurance holding company. Prior to White Mountains, John was a Fixed Income Portfolio Manager for West End Capital Management, where he directly managed global portfolios of fixed income securities and interest rate derivatives for a $1 billion hedge fund sponsored by Berkshire Hathaway. John is a CFA charterholder, received his master’s degree in Business Administration from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Saint John’s University (MN).
